Sade Sati: which rashis are in it in 2026 and what each phase means
Saturn is in Meena until 2028, so Kumbha, Meena and Mesha Moon signs are in Sade Sati. The three phases with dates, how to read your own chart, what it is not.

Sade Sati is the seven-and-a-half-year stretch during which Saturn, in its slow transit, passes through the sign before your Moon sign, your Moon sign itself, and the sign after it. Saturn has been in Meena (Pisces) since 29 March 2025 and, apart from a short excursion in 2027, stays there until 23 February 2028. So right now three Moon signs are in Sade Sati: Kumbha (Aquarius) in its last phase, Meena (Pisces) at the peak, and Mesha (Aries) in the first phase.
That is the whole fact. Everything else, the dread, the forwarded messages, the relative who lowers their voice to say “Sade Sati chal rahi hai”, is interpretation, and most of it is cruder than what the tradition teaches. This post explains how the period is counted, what the three phases are meant to feel like, how to find where you stand in your own chart, and why about a quarter of everyone you know is in Sade Sati at any moment without the sky falling on them.
How Sade Sati is counted
Saturn takes about twenty-nine and a half years to circle the zodiac, roughly two and a half years per sign. Count three signs, the one before your Moon, your Moon sign and the one after, and you get seven and a half years: sade saat, hence Sade Sati.
It is counted from your Moon sign (your rashi), not from your lagna and not from the “star sign” of English-language horoscopes. If you are not sure which sign your Moon occupies, our guide to finding your Moon sign explains it, and the free kundali in the app shows it at once.
The classical transit rules behind this are simple. Saturn transiting the 3rd, 6th and 11th houses from the Moon is counted favourable; Saturn in the 12th, 1st and 2nd is counted testing, as is Saturn in the 4th and the 8th (the two Dhaiya positions, each about two and a half years). Sade Sati is just the name for the three testing houses that happen to come one after the other.
Who is in Sade Sati now, and until when
Saturn’s movements for the next few years (Lahiri ayanamsa):
| Date | Saturn |
|---|---|
| 29 March 2025 | enters Meena |
| 27 July to 11 December 2026 | retrograde within Meena (now at about 15°) |
| 3 June 2027 | enters Mesha |
| 20 October 2027 | slips back into Meena while retrograde |
| 23 February 2028 | enters Mesha for good |
From this the three Sade Sati signs fall out:
- Kumbha Moon: third and final phase. It began when Saturn entered Makara in January 2020. Saturn’s stay in Meena is the last leg. It pauses between June and October 2027, when Saturn briefly moves to Mesha, and ends for good on 23 February 2028.
- Meena Moon: second, peak phase. Saturn is transiting over the Moon itself. The first phase ran from April 2022 (Saturn in Kumbha); the third phase begins when Saturn settles into Mesha in 2028 and the whole period ends around April 2030, when Saturn moves on to Vrishabha.
- Mesha Moon: first phase. It began on 29 March 2025 with Saturn in the 12th from the Moon. The peak begins with Saturn’s entry into Mesha, briefly from June 2027 and fully from February 2028, and the full period runs to about mid-2032.
Two more signs are in Dhaiya: Dhanu (Saturn in the 4th from the Moon) and Simha (Saturn in the 8th). Makara Moon finished its Sade Sati on 29 March 2025.

What each phase is traditionally said to feel like
The three phases are sometimes called rising, peak and setting. Treat the descriptions below as a season, not a verdict.
First phase, Saturn in the 12th from the Moon. The 12th house is expenses, distance, sleep, foreign places, and letting go. People commonly report money going out faster than planned, a move or a long separation from home, or simply lighter sleep and a busier mind. The old advice is to simplify: fewer commitments, cleaner accounts.
Second phase, Saturn over the Moon. The Moon is the mind and the body’s comfort; Saturn on it is the phase people mean when they say Sade Sati. It tends to bring heavier responsibility, a sense of being tested at work or at home, and a certain loneliness even in company. It is also, in most teachers’ experience, the phase in which people grow up most: the serious job, the marriage, the care of an ageing parent often land in this window.
Third phase, Saturn in the 2nd from the Moon. The 2nd house is family, speech, savings. The pressure eases, but the household budget and family obligations keep asking for attention; this is the phase for consolidating what the previous five years taught.
Why the same Sade Sati is light for one person and heavy for another
This is the part the forwarded messages leave out, and the part a good pandit spends most of the sitting on.
Saturn’s role in your own chart comes first. For a Vrishabha or Tula lagna Saturn is a yogakaraka, the best planet in the chart, and its transit over the Moon tends to bring demanding but rewarding years. For a Karka or Simha lagna Saturn rules difficult houses and the same transit asks more patience. A strong Saturn in the birth chart, in its own sign or exalted, usually gives a disciplined and productive Sade Sati.
The dasha running at the time matters as much as the transit. Transit is weather; dasha is the season. A Jupiter or Venus mahadasha running through Sade Sati softens it considerably; many people complete one without noticing. If you are unsure which period you are in, see how Vimshottari dasha is read.
Degrees matter. Saturn entering your Moon sign is not the same as Saturn reaching your Moon. If your Moon is at 25° of Meena, Saturn, now at about 15°, has not touched it yet; the exact pass comes in early 2027. Most people feel the peak in the months around that exact contact, not for a flat two and a half years.
Ashtakavarga and the Moon’s own strength. Pandits also count the bindus (points) Saturn earns in the transited sign in your Ashtakavarga, and check whether your natal Moon is bright or dark, aspected by Jupiter or alone. Some traditions grade the period from gold to iron by the murti, the Moon’s position on the day Saturn entered the sign. These are questions for a consultation; the rashi alone cannot answer them.
A worked example
Priya was born with the Moon at 25° Meena, in Revati nakshatra, with a Dhanu lagna. For her, Saturn rules the 2nd and 3rd houses: not a yogakaraka, not a malefic lord either, a planet of routine and effort. Her Sade Sati began in April 2022. Through 2025 and 2026 Saturn has been climbing through Meena behind her Moon; the exact conjunction arrives in the first half of 2027, and the late-2027 retrograde brings Saturn back towards it. Meanwhile she is running a Venus mahadasha, with Venus well placed. A sensible reading: a demanding stretch around 2027 in the areas Saturn rules for her, speech, finances and effort, carried by a benefic dasha. Not a curse; a year to be organised in.
Simple, optional observances
None of this is required and nothing bad follows from skipping it; these are the traditional ways of meeting Saturn’s season well.
- Keep Saturdays simple and useful: visit an elderly relative, help someone who works with their hands, give sesame, oil or a blanket in winter.
- Reciting the Hanuman Chalisa or the Shani mantra “Om Sham Shanaishcharaya Namah” in the evening is the most common practice in north India.
- Saturn rewards routine: fixed sleep, fixed work hours and honest accounts are, in the oldest sense, the remedy.
Anyone who says an expensive puja or a gemstone is necessary to “cancel” Sade Sati is selling you something; the tradition does not say that.
How to check your own position
Open your kundali, note your Moon sign and degree, and compare with the dates above. The free chart at app.astrosimply.com/kundali shows both. To go deeper, ask the app’s chat about Saturn’s role for your lagna, with the classical rules cited; for a full reading, our pandit ji offers a one-hour consultation on WhatsApp and phone call (details).
Frequently asked questions
Is Sade Sati always bad?
No. For many charts it is the period of most growth and most lasting achievement, especially where Saturn is strong or is the yogakaraka for the lagna. The results depend on Saturn’s role in your chart, the running dasha, and the degree distance between Saturn and your Moon.
Does Saturn’s retrograde in 2026 change anything?
Saturn is retrograde within Meena from late July to mid-December 2026. A retrograde does not start or end Sade Sati; the same three signs stay in it. It does mean Saturn lingers over the same few degrees for months, so a Moon between about 13° and 20° of Meena feels this year more closely than others.
My rashi is given differently in two apps. Which is right?
Most Indian apps and panchangs use the Lahiri ayanamsa, as does the table above. If one app says Meena and another Mesha, your Moon is probably within a degree or two of the boundary, and the exact birth time decides it. Have the chart checked with your precise time and place of birth.
