Understanding your Moon sign (rashi)
Why Vedic astrology reads your horoscope from the Moon, how to find your rashi, what each of the twelve signs is like, and why your rashi may differ from your "star sign".
When someone in India asks “what is your rashi?”, they mean your Moon sign — the sign of the zodiac the Moon was passing through when you were born. Daily and weekly horoscopes in newspapers, temple calendars and apps like AstroSimply are almost always written by rashi.
Why the Moon, and not the Sun?
Western astrology puts the Sun first. Vedic astrology gives the Moon (Chandra) a special place for several reasons:
- The Moon represents the mind (manas) — how you feel, react and experience the world day to day. Classical texts call it the karaka (significator) of the mind and of the mother.
- The Moon moves fast. It crosses a sign in about two and a quarter days, so it captures much more individual detail than the Sun, which stays in a sign for a month.
- Timing starts from the Moon. Your Vimshottari dasha periods begin from the nakshatra the Moon occupied at birth.
- Transits are read from the Moon. When an astrologer says Saturn or Jupiter is in your “4th house” for a general forecast, they usually count from your Moon sign. This is called reading gochar from the Moon.
How to find your rashi
You need your date, time and place of birth. Because the Moon changes sign every two days or so, the date alone is often enough — but if you were born on a day when the Moon changed sign, the time decides it. The app works this out for you from your birth details.
Your rashi is not the same as the “star sign” you read in Western magazines. That one is your Sun sign in the tropical zodiac. Your Vedic rashi is your Moon sign in the sidereal zodiac. They are different planets measured on different zodiacs, so they often do not match.
The twelve rashis at a glance
Each rashi has a ruling planet and an element, which give it a basic flavour:
| Rashi | Western name | Ruler | Element | In a few words |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mesha | Aries | Mars | Fire | Direct, energetic, quick to start |
| Vrishabha | Taurus | Venus | Earth | Steady, loyal, enjoys comfort and beauty |
| Mithuna | Gemini | Mercury | Air | Curious, talkative, quick to learn |
| Karka | Cancer | Moon | Water | Caring, protective, attached to home |
| Simha | Leo | Sun | Fire | Warm, proud, natural leader |
| Kanya | Virgo | Mercury | Earth | Careful, practical, eye for detail |
| Tula | Libra | Venus | Air | Fair-minded, social, seeks balance |
| Vrishchika | Scorpio | Mars | Water | Intense, private, determined |
| Dhanu | Sagittarius | Jupiter | Fire | Optimistic, principled, loves learning |
| Makara | Capricorn | Saturn | Earth | Patient, disciplined, builds slowly |
| Kumbha | Aquarius | Saturn | Air | Independent, thoughtful, community-minded |
| Meena | Pisces | Jupiter | Water | Gentle, imaginative, compassionate |
These are starting points, not boxes. The Moon’s nakshatra, the house it falls in, and the planets that aspect it all change how a rashi expresses itself. Two people of Karka rashi can be quite different.
Rashi, lagna and Sun sign — which matters most?
All three are useful:
- Lagna (ascendant) describes your body, outlook and the overall shape of your life. It needs an accurate birth time.
- Rashi (Moon sign) describes your mind and emotions, and is the basis for general horoscopes and timing.
- Sun sign describes your soul’s purpose, vitality and relationship with authority.
When your birth time is uncertain, the rashi is the most reliable of the three — which is another reason it is used for general forecasts.
A note on Sade Sati
You may have heard of Sade Sati, the roughly seven-and-a-half-year period when Saturn passes through the sign before your Moon, your Moon sign, and the sign after it. It has a fearsome reputation, but most people go through it two or three times in a lifetime, and for many it is a period of hard work, maturity and lasting achievement. How it feels depends on the rest of your chart. There is no reason to panic, and no need to buy anything.
Reading your daily rashiphal well
A rashi-based horoscope is written for everyone who shares your Moon sign — about one in twelve people. Treat it as a gentle weather report for your mood and priorities, not a personal prediction. For guidance that is truly yours, look at your full kundali: lagna, houses and your current dasha.
On AstroSimply you can read today’s horoscope for every rashi for free, and get it each morning as a notification or email.
